The history of Eschdorf

more than 700 years

In 2017, Eschdorf celebrated its 700th anniversary. We wanted to mark this occasion in style, and a grand parade took place on September 24th, 2017, as part of the traditional Eschdorf fair (September 22nd-24th, 2017). After an eventful and highly successful weekend, we would like to extend our sincere thanks to all participants, helpers, and contributors who actively supported us in organizing and carrying out the festival. We also thank everyone who contributed financially or materially to the festival in any way.

Thanks to your support and commitment, the 700th anniversary celebration in Eschdorf was a resounding success. Such a festival would have been unthinkable without your support!

  • First mentioned on September 30, 1370

Eschdorf was first documented in 1317 in a church record. The original name, "Eschwinsdorf," likely derives from Eschwin von Krosigh, one of the first locators who granted land to settlers and allocated the village fields. This led to the development of a linear village situated on both sides of the Schullwitzbach stream at the foot of the Triebenberg hill. Subsequently, fifteen different names for Eschdorf appear in church chronicles, including Eschentorff (1420), Eschmannstorff (1428), Eschdorf (1485), Eyschmannsdorff (1501), and Eschendorf (1608).

  • Altar consecration, December 4, 1348

The church, built in the early 13th century, received an altar dedicated to Saint Barbara in 1348. The Eschdorf church, now called St. Barbara's, was a place of pilgrimage against lightning strikes until the Reformation.

  • Quandt, March 12, 1832

    Johann Gottlob von Quandt (1787 – 1859)

If you are interested in 700 years of Eschdorf's fascinating and eventful history, we recommend the chronicle "700 Years of Eschdorf 1317–2017" by author Dieter Zumpe. This richly illustrated brochure offers a glimpse into the period from the first written record of the town to the present day and introduces you to historical figures who originated from or worked in Eschdorf. It also includes accounts from contemporary witnesses of more recent times.

The parade is also documented on a DVD. If we have sparked your interest, please contact us.
